Ingredients

For the Base
  • 10 slices Brioche Bread Stale bread works best for soaking up the custard.
  • 6 large Eggs Fresh eggs provide better flavor.
  • 2 cups Whole Milk Can substitute with 2% milk.
For the Creamy Filling
  • 8 oz Cream Cheese Opt for full-fat or reduced-fat 'brick' cream cheese.
For the Sweetness
  • 2 cups Fresh Strawberries Fresh is key; frozen can make the dish soggy.
  • 1/2 cup Maple Syrup Adds distinct, comforting sweetness.
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla Extract Always use pure vanilla for the best taste.
  • 1 tsp Kosher Salt Just a pinch enhances flavor.
For the Finishing Touch
  • 1 cup Confectioners' Sugar Optional for dusting before serving.

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Mixing Bowl
  • whisk

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Lightly coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  2. Evenly distribute half of the cubed brioche bread across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. Spread half of the cream cheese cubes over the layer of brioche bread and then sprinkle half of the diced strawberries on top.
  4. Top with the remaining cubed brioche bread, covering all the fillings completely.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and kosher salt until fully combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread, ensuring all surfaces are covered.
  7. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and allow the dish to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes prior to baking.
  9. Bake covered with foil for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and continue baking for another 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let cool for a few minutes and serve warm with remaining fresh strawberries and a dusting of confectioners' sugar if desired.
