  • 1/2 cup Vegetable Oil or melted butter
  • 1 cup Water substitute with milk for richer texture
For the Caramel Layer
  • 14 oz Kraft Caramels or homemade caramel
  • 1/4 cup Butter omit for lighter version
  • 5 oz Evaporated Milk or whole milk
For the Toppings
  • 1 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips or dark chocolate chips
  • 1 cup Pecans or walnuts, or omit for nut-free version
For the Frosting
  • 1 container Chocolate Frosting or homemade frosting

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  2. Combine German chocolate cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and water in a mixing bowl and mix until smooth.
  3. Pour half of the batter into the baking pan and bake for 15 minutes or until partially set.
  4. In a saucepan, melt Kraft caramels, butter, and evaporated milk over medium heat, stirring continuously.
  5. Remove the first layer from the oven, pour caramel mixture over it, and sprinkle chocolate chips and pecans on top.
  6. Pour the remaining batter over the caramel and toppings, smoothing it out, and bake for an additional 20 minutes.
  7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes before frosting.
